David Briggs, religion reporter for The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer, has reported on issues of faith and ethics since 1985. Briggs, who holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a Master's degree from Yale Divinity School, came to The Plain Dealer in the spring of 1998 after almost a decade of national religion reporting for The Associated Press. He was a religion writer for The Buffalo News from 1985 to the fall of 1988. He has produced major series on medical ethics, AIDS and the church, sexual abuse of missionary children and revolutionary changes in the role of religion in American life. Briggs, president of the Religion Newswriters Association from 2000-2002, has won several honors, including the RNA's Supple Award for the religion writer of the year and the Wilbur Award for excellence in religion writing in the secular press in national and Top 15 newspaper markets.
