Dr. Peter Benson joined Search
Institute as a research scientist in 1978, and has served as its
president since 1985. He directs a staff of professionals dedicated to
advancing the wellbeing of children and adolescents through scientific
research, evaluation, consultation, training, and the development of
practical resources. He speaks and lectures widely, and consults with
numerous communities and organizations on youth development issues.
Dr. Benson is widely recognized as one of the
leading contributors to the fields of child and adolescent development.
His research and writing have pioneered new thinking and action in
hundreds of cities across the United States and internationally.
Dr. Benson serves on numerous boards and as an
advisor to foundations, federal and state agencies, and national
organizations. In 1991, he received the prestigious William James Award
from the American Psychological Association for career contributions to
psychology. His work has been reported in Time, Newsweek, U.S. News &
World Report, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and the
Washington Post.
Dr. Benson is the author or co-author of 15
books and more than 100 articles in scientific journals. He is editor of
a major book series on community and social change and serves as a
columnist for Youth Today. He holds a master's degree from Yale
University and a doctorate in social psychology from the University of
Denver.
