.jpg) Peter J. Gomes,
Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and Pusey Minister in the Memorial
Church, is an American Baptist minister. A member of the Faculty of Arts
and Sciences and of the Faculty of Divinity, Professor Gomes was
presented with the Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Award by Harvard University
in 2001 and with the Preston N. Williams Black Alumni/ae Award by
Harvard Divinity School in 2006. His most recent books are Strength
for the Journey: Biblical Wisdom for Daily Living (2003) and The
New York Times best-seller The Good Life: Truths That Last in
Times of Need (2002). He is the recipient of 36 honorary degrees,
and is an Honorary Fellow of Emmanuel College, the University of
Cambridge, England, where the Gomes Lectureship is established in his
name.
In 2005 he
presented a series of sermons in St. Edmundsbury Cathedral, England; in
2004 he gave the Convocation Address at Harvard Divinity School; and in
2003 he delivered the Lyttleton Addresses at Eton College, England. In
1998, Gomes was named Clergy of the Year by Religion in American Life.
Other New York Times best-selling books include The Good Book:
Reading the Bible with Mind and Heart; in addition, he has published
10 volumes of sermons and numerous articles and papers.
Among other
trusteeships, Professor Gomes serves as Harvard University trustee of
the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; trustee of Bates College, Lewiston,
Maine; and trustee of Roxbury Latin School, West Roxbury, Massachusetts |
